A friend of mine was about just done with the french polish on his cedar topped classical guitar, but wasn't really happy with the shine of it so he used a bit of Stewmac's swirl remover, a cloth and a bit of elbow grease to give it a little bling. After testing on a small area on the back and the top, to see if all was good, he then proceeded to do the whole top with it. After a bit these marks that look like nail marks on well used guitars started to appear at some places on the top, under the finish.
Has anyone ever had this happen to them? I'm baffled and have no idea what happened.
Note that all this is happening under the french polish, the guitar is shiny and very pretty, but it looks like some of the wood under it was affected by the product...

edit: He has done the same thing with his previous guitar, and none of this happened.

you may have worked through the polish and exposed the wood

I think bluescreek is right. Burning through is weird in FP. It sometimes just looks like a dull spot, so you try to polish more. Instead of polishing the spot just seems to grow. That's when I realize that I didn't body up the shellac enough and need to stop trying to spirit off.

I haven't seen the guitar in person so I don't really know how mich shellac was applied, but I'll pass on the information, thank you guys!

Exactly -- polishing compound pressed into bare wood.
